Virtual Poetry Jam: Win an Amazon Gift Card

On Saturday, I posted a video of three-year-old Samuel Chelpka reciting from memory a piece of poetry by Billy Collins. It inspired me to host a virtual poetry jam here on my site, to encourage others to read poetry aloud.

All you have to do is record yourself reading poetry (can be your own or someone else's) and then post a link to the video here on my site. I'll choose one on Saturday, February 18 and give that person a $50 Amazon gift card!

There's no age limit, and you can submit multiple pieces, if you want. The important thing is to share some poetry!

You did indeed, Dan! Thanks so much for sharing. I hadn't known that Donald Rumsfeld was a poet. You taught me something!

I'm going to post this entry here, too, because it's getting a little lost in the original post while the other entries are showing up on this one. This comes from Kathie:

I learned this poem (Little Orphant Annie by James Whitcomb Riley) in 4h grade. Haven't read it since then. I didn't even remember that I remembered it until a few years ago. Go figure .. This year I decided it was time to video it ...
I have a few others that I will definitely have to review before reciting: Oh Captain, My Captain is one of them. It just might be time to video a few personal ones as well.

I enjoyed doing a video search on YouTube to see all the other people that have also recorded, "Little Orphant Annie" and enjoyed them all -- old folks to 5 year olds.

Thanks for sharing your pieces, P.A. Tish! I see these are from a few years ago. Have you kept at it?

Sigh. I should redo it. But then I might not do it. So here it is.

Bravo, Mark! I love it! Brave stuff. Challenges me. Your dialect is captivating, too. So glad you shared it.

Man, you people aren't going to make this judging easy, are you?

I'm going to post this one here, too. It's another piece from John Lorson. He posted this comment on another post, but I'm putting it here so all of the pieces can live in one place. :-)

Denice, you've created a monster! Here's another one! (hope we weren't limited to only one entry!)

Here's another that was posted on a different post. I'm posting it here for the sake of keeping them all together.

This one is from Laura:

OK, here you go! This is a poem that my grandfather asked me to bring to the nursing home and read to him a couple of weeks before he died.
